The Hades and Persephone myth we know is just one variation of it. You could argue there's a proto version with the lady abducting the dude. People influenced by religions like Christianity, Islam, and Judaism have a hard time grasping this but: Greeks did not have a "canon".
In Islam there is a term called "People of the Book", referring to monotheistic religions that follow a specific text. In Islamic empires, these people were seen as better and they were permitted more rights than those without a "book religion".
Things like the Teutonic and Greek religions would not be considered to be in this category. They were not nearly as cohesive. They changed drastically over time and geography. One town could have a completely different version of a myth than its neighbor.
You might not know this but many polytheistic religions in Europe and upper Africa are connected and mixed together. Roman's LOVED saying things like "oh yeah Hercules and Thor are basically the same" to unite their empire. You might be going "... they are extremely not..."
But at certain points they sort of were because a Celt would be like "sounds legit" or even "maybe that's a better dude to follow." These religions were fluid and not even remotely monolithic. Just look at the two VERY distinctive yet contemporary concepts for Dionysus.
There was just no issue with it. These were heavily influenced by societal norms. Etruscans, who were way more chill with ladies, had a Hera and Zeus that were WAY more chill with each other, with Hera even being cool with their Hercules.
A lot of these cults were super secretive too. We do not have great details about Hades and Persephone, just a few examples. One of our biggest primary sources? Is...Roman, actually. From a guy named Ovid who we know loved to depart from the popular traditions of the time.
This was on purpose. It was cool. And he remixed these myths specifically so he could make commentary on contemporary Roman politics. Oh and in Ovid's version? Hades is NOT a willing participant in this. Venus has Cupid no scope him with an arrow.
Which actually makes narrative sense given that we don't have a lot of examples of him doing shit like this. You could write it like the dude got god roofied for fucks sake. You don't have to try and make a shorty version sympathetic. You are not trapped by "canon".
So in conclusion, there's no real way to say "this is more valid". Greeks would not give two shits if you said Persephone fucking kidnapped Hades. Some of them would sign the fuck up.
