Important email to CFIB from @mcnallyrobinson: "As Manitobans owning an independent bookstore, we're very frustrated about being closed for Christmas when huge corporations like Walmart & Costco get to stay open & sell everything including the books and products we sell!"
"It's too inconsistent to be fair, and creates an uneven playing field for local independent businesses to compete and survive."
If big box stores selling groceries can sell any consumer products at the same time, then all independent retailers should be able to serve 25% of their regular customer volume.
Or the big box stores should be limited to groceries and pharmacy products as they were during Vermont's lockdown or the one right now in Wales.
A small, independent flower shop = closed to instore customers. Instore flowers at Safeway, Costco = no problem.
These are deeply unfair rules to small business. If small retailers miss out on a good Christmas season, they are toast.
