The reason so many pundits lecture the left about trying to empathize with Trump voters is because they know it’s useless asking fascists to restrain themselves.

And it’s easier to pretend this is the left’s fault than to admit we live with monsters and need to defeat them.

Groups of humans are susceptible to fits of fascist cruelty and stupidity. America is not immune. We are experiencing one of them right now. Fascism can’t be reasoned with, it can only be contained and defeated.

That’s it. The truth is boring. And punditry hates boring.

In the face of fascism, its tempting to imagine that there are some magic words, some perfect argument the left could use to snap our fellow citizens out of it.

But we just had four years of horror, and they didnt budge. Cruelty is thoughtless. You just have to fight it.
