The best apology is changed behavior. But sometimes that isn’t enough, the hurt is too big. You apologize & do the work because it’s the right thing to do, not because you’re owed forgiveness. But yes, times are “troubling” when you can get a whole mini series out of the “modern” concept of facing consequences for your actions aka “cancel culture”
I’ve said this a dozen times, but my main gripe with “cancel culture” is it’s an amorphous catch all phrase that’s used to describe a whole host of vastly different things we already have words for.
A consequence is a consequence, regardless of if you agree with it. Being fired, losing sponsors, losing followers, facing criminal charges, being blocked on social media, people not wanting to associate with you, people not buying your product...
“But what about dog piling & online bullying? Isn’t that being canceled?” Ehh I would just call that dog piling or online harassment. Not saying either are ok but I think “cancel culture” is too broad & at this point mostly a dog whistle for abusers who wanna skirt consequences
