At the last GFC @UCalgary the topic of political staffers/related intimidating academics from speaking was raised. The provost asked for examples and said academics are members of the public and free to engage. I am writing to her with this and several examples of intimidation https://twitter.com/stevebuick2/status/1327653017873641473
It happens publicly like this. It also happens privately in many ways. Tenured academics need to use their power to speak up and ensure that not only academic freedom is maintained but we truly support public engagement by all. #ableg @UCalgary
And I’d like to quote from the Chicago principles of free speech “concerns about civility and mutual respect can never be used as a justification for closing off discussion of ideas, however offensive or disagreeable those ideas may be to some members of our community.”
Why am I quoting this? This government requires all universities in Alberta to adopt free speech principles based on this doctrine. what is good for the goose is good for the gander, as they say
