Donegal comfortably defeated Armagh today, and Donegal played so well in the 1st half that the 2nd 35 minutes turned out to be academic. I wanted to get a look to see just how good Donegal were in the opening 35 minutes; and the answer is “very”!
The bottom of the Timeline tells us plenty; Donegal had 25 possessions and were only turned over 4 times; they managed 22 shots in a half of football. Armagh had 19 possessions, yet Donegal managed to turn Armagh over 12 times.
The commentators on Sky talked a fair bit about the kickouts, and yes Donegal did well on the Armagh kickouts, especially at the end of the half as they won 5 of the final 6 Armagh kickouts, but they were impressive way beyond their kickout strategy.
Looking at Donegal possession starts and we can see that they did great in all areas. They scored 1-0 from the 4 of their own kickouts they won, scored 0-3 off Armagh kickouts, 0-7 from Armagh turnovers, 0-1 from the Throw In and 0-1 from an Armagh short shot.
Here are the outcomes (and locations) for the end point of Donegal’s 1st half possessions; only 4 didn’t turn into a shot and just 3 didn’t make it inside Armagh’s 45; all of 3 of these were shots. During the 1st half Donegal didn’t concede a turnover beyond the end of Armagh’s D
Not only did Donegal play great football but their shooting was very good too; scoring 1-12 from their 22 shots. Donegal’s 1st half today was as good as any team could expect to see; unstoppable going forward and didn’t allow opposition to score from play. They'll be hard to beat
