The negative reactions to MANK are honestly reminding me of similar reactions to another historical fiction film/biopic starring Gary Oldman
It's kinda eerie how similar the reactions are. Punk fans hated this movie because it wasn't accurate to Sid Vicious' life at all. But you could make the case that because Sid is the one telling the story, he's getting things wrong, especially...
...because he's telling the story after the death of Nancy Spungen and his memory is only getting worse from the amount of heroin he had taken.
But punk fans also hate this movie because of its attitude towards the Sex Pistols. Director Alex Cox viewed them as sellouts and not as the punk legends critics had made them out to be. The film instead focuses on drug addiction and the love between Sid and Nancy.
I know more about the Sex Pistols than I do about Orson Welles (btw, Cox was right), so I can't tell you about how if Fincher or his father were right about Welles, but it's fascinating to see this film based around an essay that's largely proven to be false get made.
Is MANK gonna be historically inaccurate with some sort of message or theme like S&N or even THE IRISHMAN was? Or feature a character who believes this is what has happen? I dunno, I'm just not as excited as I was.
