With all the talk about Black Wall Street this is so important. They built wealth off of the land allotments they received from the federal govt as freedman of the Oklahoma tribes. Many allotments ended up being rich with oil. https://twitter.com/choctawfreedmen/status/1327290169637138433
All freedmen received land regardless of age gender or marital status.
It’s really a testament to repatriation and even a model for the potentiality of reparations.

I’m going to say it again, if black people saw Native tribes as the legitimate nation-states and true owners of this land, and Native people saw black people as refugees of a violent and oppressive regime (the US), we could do so much together. Like it would be powerful.
To be clear - land allotments in Oklahoma were NOT reparations. They were the US government’s attempt to destroy tribes and their governments by dividing communally held land into privately owned property.
I do not believe it is something that should be applauded.

But the particular success that newly freed black communities had as a result, in comparison to those that didn’t have the wealth-building opportunity makes it very clear that boot-strap capitalism is a fallacy for POC. And there is a definite case for reparations.
Here is a unique story that shows how the process of land allotments worked and the pitfalls as well - for example any Native or black person with significant money/property in Indian Territory was assigned a “white guardian”.
They often stole it. https://martincitytelegraph.com/2020/01/19/who-was-the-real-sarah-rector-the-richest-black-girl-in-america/
