A lot of people talk about fantastic running and pressing stats of Bielsa’s Leeds. True, it is both visually and statistically great to see, but, in my opinion, (sub)-(sub) principles that they have showed and used so far this season have gone a little under the radar... ⬇️
Bielsa wants his teams to progress vertically, but, if they are prevented from progressing in that way, Leeds use their positional structure to create new dynamics = adapting the structure to the circumstances and the amount of the space...
As it is seen, half-space overload is one of variations they use frequently - even if they are numerically inferior - 2v4 - off the ball runs and properly adopted sub-principles allow them to create enough space for progression.
Players must be trained and learned how to create space; how and when to make runs. As it is mentioned, in those situations, diagonal and vertical dummies are most effective - using them, player can open a passing lane, offer himself as a option and exploit other factors...
Also, lateral rotations are so important. Players must follow situations and constantly be aware of their teammates’ positions - of course, there are rules which have to be followed, but a rule don’t imply fixed positions of certain players, it implies a certain, proper structure
