At Winter Meetings a few years ago, I met a woman who had recently graduated from college and was interviewing for front office jobs. She had been really smart in her approach. In high school, she had pushed to become the baseball team's scorekeeper/statistician.
She told me it had been a battle to be allowed in or near the dugout during games. The coach told her a girl couldn't be that involved with the team. She could do useful work for them and lay groundwork for a career in baseball herself. She won that battle and got that experience
Her story is one I think of often. How tough it must be for teenage girls with front office aspirations to gain relevant experience in high school and probably college. Women need more impressive resumes just to get in the door, but starting early can have a lot of hurdles.
Unfortunately, I lost this woman's email. I hope she made her way into baseball. I hope she hasn't been crushed by a peppering of indignities. I hope there are more teenage girls fighting to get experience around baseball so they, too, can make themselves into a great candidate.
The problem with any "women can't be qualified to work in baseball!" take is that women have to work harder just to get in. Women know it will be a long journey and yet they're joining FOs anyway. Kim Ng's story is like the pinnacle of this. You KNOW she wants this challenge.
