What we hope to do with ease, we must first learn to do with diligence

-Samuel Johnson

What is diligence?

/Thread/
Latin word diligentia:

comes from two words that mean “to choose” and “to love”

The diligent choose to stay committed because they love what they do
Learn to love what you do

Passion comes with mastery and time.

Adopt a craftsman's approach to your work.

Make the quality of what you do your primary focus.

You won't love work that isn't high quality
So, how do you become a craftsman?

Embrace the apprentice stage and soak up knowledge from mentors and masters of your chosen craft

Work at it consistently

Deliberately move out of your comfort zone and stretch your limits
There is a reason the 10,000-hour rule has some merit

But don't necessarily let the amount of time prevent you from starting

The master craftsman started as an apprentice

Every Twitter account started with 0 followers
You don't need to be Michael Phelps (10k+ hours) to be a competent or above-average swimmer

Josh Kaufman suggests that with just 20 hours of focused, deliberate work and practice, you can go from absolute beginner to performing noticeably better

He outlines 4 tips:
1. Deconstruct the skill:

Reduce the skill into small bite-sized parts

Practice the most important parts first - the fundamentals

For example:

If you want to learn a new language, learn the most common 2,000 words and you'll have 80% text coverage.
2. Self-correct:

Use reference materials to learn enough that you know when you make a mistake so you can correct yourself.

3. Remove barriers to learning:

Identify and remove anything that distracts you from focusing on the skill you want to learn.
4. Commit to practicing at least 20 hours:

20 hours amounts to just 40 minutes a day

No excuses

What if you practiced for 100 hours? 1000?

The time will pass anyway
If you can commit to diligently learning and practicing your craft you will emerge as a true craftsman

So embrace diligence

Practice diligence by choosing to work passionately, efficiently, and caring for the little details of your goals, dreams, and plans.
Be diligent in the pursuit of your most cherished dreams and they will surely come to pass
