I was called an "old gay" on Twitter yesterday. It was said in a way intended to other me. It was said to make me feel bad about myself.

I've been glowing with pride ever since.
You see, it wasn't that long ago that there was a shortage of "old gays" because an entire generation was wiped out by a HIV/AIDS.

The ones we kept became giants. They fought for me when they didn't know me. They built a world that allowed me to come out and grow and thrive.
In my lifetime, gays old and young alike continued the struggle. We fought to knock down sodomy laws. We pushed to repeal DADT. We worked until we attained marriage equality.

The world has changed, and it wouldn't have without a bunch of old gays who survived a plague.
So, I do not yet think I have earned the title of "gay elder," I'm working on it. I hope to one day be worthy to sit at that table. In the meantime, if you want to call me an "old gay," go ahead.

I'm old enough, after all, to know what that really means.
