Living in DC and being a big ole Black lifelong democrat, I took a long walk to see all the evil 'other' Trump folk who warshed into town to protest... democracy. As I started to turn up my nose, a lil' old couple decked to the 9s in MAGA were struggling to take a selfie.
Being from North Carolina, before I could even think about it, I asked if I could help them and they very gratefully consented. They were not scared of me, as many of my fellow lib city dwellers are. They cheesed by the reflecting pool and I got their best angles.
It was their first time to DC. They were so excited. They were human people. They were kind. Later, I gave a little MAGA grandma directions and said 'welcome to DC' to these very folks I was not feelin' welcome toward. Lord. We are all human. We are all doing the best we can.
Everybody is somebody's beloved grandma. Or the teacher who made all the difference to that one student. Or the waitress who is the only person an elderly regular talks to each day and lovingly listens to his same stories. Lord, help me remember that disagreement need not be hate
