It’s been a long week. And I think what’s happened to me is a clear example of the climate journalists are dealing with right now. (A THREAD)
Last Friday I got fitted for riot gear ahead of election protests. Enough said.
Monday night I was sitting in my news car around 10:30 p.m. in downtown Las Vegas. Some man walked over to my passenger side window, started banging on it, screaming “GET THE F**K OUT OF HERE B*TCH!” Then walked over to my photographers car & did the same thing to him.
Then he walked back to my car, this time the drivers side & started screaming the same thing over again. I was bracing for the window to shatter that’s how hard he was hitting it. I don’t even want to think about what would have happened if we were standing outside going live.
Tonight, I was going live outside of the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Unbeknownst to me, a young man was off to the side, waiting for me to go live. As soon as he saw his moment he ran over, pushed me aside and started yelling & swearing into our camera.
I felt scared and vulnerable not knowing what he was going to do. He was right in my face (with no mask). The worst part was how proud he was after and so were his group of 30ish friends. They looked young, maybe 18-20.
I believe the man Monday night may have been homeless. He is an example of the mental health crisis this country is dealing with. Tonight was an example of the political climate. I’m feel tired and sad.
I am someone’s daughter, sister and friend. If you don’t like certain journalists or certain outlets, ok don’t watch/read. But please treat everyone with respect *on or off* the job and STOP interrupting journalists live-shots. It’s not funny, it’s traumatizing.
