A quick comment on the current state of the US:

Suppression measures are not currently sufficient for R<1.

Hospitals seem likely to reach capacity in many regions, forcing lockdowns.

If we are going to lock down anyway, do it early, intelligently, and go all out.
Not to mention, do it as ethically as possible.

Provide resources, including temporary housing and stipends, so that people don't get sent home to infect their families.

Restricting travel will make things go much, much faster.
I like what Australia did with schools. If I remember correctly, they didn't close completely, but kept schools open for those with significant needs (like therapies, housing, etc).

Even in Cambridge MA, many families said they might become homeless if schools closed.
One asterisk on the lockdowns that are starting: I don't like the short lockdowns with half measures.

Flattening the curve then opening up right around holiday season could be an absolute disaster, creating even more suffering (and potentially another need for a lockdown).
