Ever wonder why my last name is so long? Why people from certain Latin American countries have such long names with multiple last names? What is the cultural background of it? 1/5
In Puerto Rico, as in other Latin American countries, when you are named you get both your father’s and your mother’s last names. This is important because last names represent your heritage, from your father and your mother side.2/5
Our mothers lineages are not erased. We can easily look back through many generations from both of our families. 3/5
Why do I have to hyphenate my last names? I refuse to erase my mothers lineage. And here in the US I have to use this method so that people call me by the right name. 4/5
However, more often that not, people call me Mr. Rosario and blatantly omit the hyphenation. I hope that if you read this and have a friend of Latin American decent you try to ask about they last names and how to pronounce them. That will make use feel included. 5/5
