Whatever overtures Biden made to the left during his campaign (& however limited they were), this "reaching out" almost entirely omitted issues of war & militarism. The "Biden Sanders Unity Task Force" didn't meaningfully touch issues of US aggression & violence around the world.
Yet US militarism intersects with all other issues. You can't collaborate with other countries to reduce carbon emissions while bombing or escalating toward them, and you can't address the complete failure of social programs during covid w/o tackling the bloated "security" state.
Biden's already drawing from pro-war, weapons-industry-funded think tanks like CSIS and CNAS for his transition team. This is not unusual, but that's exactly the problem. It's going to be incredibly important to stay vigilant about opposing the bipartisan pro-war consensus.
The Obama-Biden administration played a role in expanding presidential war-making powers (unfortunately by unilaterally waging interventions), meaning war and militarism are the areas where Biden will have the most power to act without Congress signing off on it.
Since March we've seen US militarism make the Covid crisis worse--siphoning $ away from public health measures, and bombing & sanctioning countries hard hit by Covid. It's an incredibly important time to oppose war, and it's going to be important to do so diligently under Biden.
