It is a gut punch to hear from other #firstgen students, like I was, and those underrepresented in academia who don't know the hidden curriculum and don't get mentors who truly care enough about their development to be engaged.
To all the mentors out there, ๐Ÿ‘ they ๐Ÿ‘ don't ๐Ÿ‘ know ๐Ÿ‘ what ๐Ÿ‘ they ๐Ÿ‘ don't ๐Ÿ‘ know! If you are relying on your mentees to reach out, set expectations, and deadlines, you are setting them up for failure.
If you aren't helping them see what's next, asking them to coauthor, and helping give them clear structure and targets, you are setting them up for failure.
You alone might not be able to make a big impact on representation and the leaky pipeline, but you sure as hell can make sure that the #firstgen and #URM scholars you work with have the best chance of success. Do better.
