kiki’s delivery service and it’s take on burnout

an analysis thread ☆彡
in the beginning of the movie, Kiki is enthusiastic to start her year long training as a witch, rushing to leave home the first chance she gets to face the real world.
with high hopes kiki adapts to her new life in the city fairly quickly.

keeping her head high against those who make fun of her for being a witch and finding herself a place to call home.
kiki is one of the more stubborn ghibli leads, refusing to come home to her family until she feels like she accomplished her goal to become a grown witch.

a lot of pressure for a mere 13 year old.
after settleing in with a couple that runs a bakery she puts her magic to use by starting flying delivery business for herself at the bakery.

flying to different locations to make others happy, sounds like a dream job to some.
with a work ethic like none other, social butterfly attitude and eager to put herself before others her passion towards this job starts out as nothing more than genuine.
as time goes on she starts taking on more challenging jobs such as delivering a heavy package she can barely carry.

but she always bites the bullet saying “I do this every day.”
after a long day of helping an old lady, it starts to storm. ignoring her cats plea to take a safer route she argues with “we can beat the rain if we just fly a little faster.”

this is where we start to see the decline of her mental and physical health.
“today this place is boring.” she complains during her previously passion driven job.

later on she tells her friend tombo that “flying used to be fun until i started doing it for a living.”

a statement i think many can relate with.
this results in her pushing tombo away and other things that once brought her joy.

she faceplants onto her bed, drained of energy and withdrawn from the world, her burnout is represented with her losing the ability to fly.
panicked by the loss of her magic kiki tries forcefully to get herself up in the sky again.

her breaking point comes when her broom snaps in half, now a useless tool for a skill kiki no longer has the passion to pursue.
kiki’s magic and confidence roots her from both successfully doing and enjoying her job.

the stress she faces as a working witch is what drains her magic, a cycle familiar with those who also suffer from burnout.
in a trip outside the city to visit her friend Ursula she gives the witch find meaningful advice.

here we have my favorite line: “without even thinking about it I used to be able to fly, now I’m trying to look inside myself to find out how I did it.”
ursula responds “painting and magic seem very similar. sometimes i can’t paint a thing.”

urging Kiki to “stop trying to fly” and insteaf “take long walks, look at the scenery and doze off” to recharge herself. suggesting that she had overworked herself.
she regains her magic after no longer forcing herself to do everything at once and realizes that she is more than just her work.

she finds light within herself again and learns to takes flight once more.
even after 31 years Kiki’s Delivery Service proves to be carrying a timeless narrative that younger audiences can enjoy while older ones can relate to
