Jim is a literal genius, there's nothing I could say about him that wouldn't be better expressed by looking at a fraction of the art he's done for Gawker/Gizmodo/G/O over the years https://www.jimcookeart.com/ https://twitter.com/jimcookeIII/status/1327353128988139521
As wonderful as his art is—that speaks for itself—what always made me feel lucky to work with Jim was his editorial mind. If I couldn't express the point of a story in a way he could rapidly and perfectly illustrate, the story needed more work, definitionally.
Jim's done far too many brilliant illustrations for far too many stories for singling out any to mean anything, but I'd like to point at a couple.
This was brilliant work by @dianamoskovitz that was hugely difficult to illustrate because it was about a charity being a scam. Cooke found a way to illustrate the violence in the story while humanizing the victims at the center of it. https://deadspin.com/no-more-the-nfls-domestic-violence-partner-is-a-sham-1683348576
This is an iconic image that captured the point of an exceptionally complex story that proved unfortunately prescient https://deadspin.com/the-future-of-the-culture-wars-is-here-and-its-gamerga-1646145844
We knew how important the reporting @laurawags did on Vox taking advantage of unpaid workers was but were not sure how to make anyone care; Jim figured it out with an image that captured months' worth of reporting https://deadspin.com/how-sb-nation-profits-off-an-army-of-exploited-workers-1797653841
