Why Life After Death is one of the most accessible albums in hip hop - A THREAD
Life After Death follows directly after Ready To Die’s last track “Suicidal Thoughts” with Biggie dying in the hospital in the intro and experiencing life after death within several different types of songs being represented throughout the other 23 tracks
The album had 2 number 1 singles being hypnotize and mo money mo problems along with the last single being sky’s the limit which was of biggie few conscious songs throughout his short career.
Life After Death didn’t just have hits though it had posse cuts such as the biggie bone thugs collab Notorious Thugs and concept songs such as Ten Crack Commandments where explain how to sell drugs without being killed or ending up in prison
But for me this album excelled in storytelling tracks such as I Got A Story To Tell, Somebody’s Gotta Die and Niggas Bleed one of the most atmospheric, dark, gritty and well made storytelling songs ever made.
The album also gave Biggie opportunities to claim himself King of NY as the source crowned him in 1995 after Ready To Die’s success with the song Kick In The Door with subliminal disses against Nas, Ghostface, Raekwon, DJ Premier and Jeru The Damaja.
Long Kiss Goodnight was another diss track that had subliminal shots aimed at 2Pac, he performed the lyrics to the song on March 1st 1997 as a part of his Sway interview in California. And it may have been the reason he never left Cali.
It took time for it to grow on me because of its length, but Life After Death is a testament to Biggie’s range and a glance to what he could’ve been if he didn’t die when he did.
