Why Sikhs celebrate Diwali? A thread.
We are a minority in England..about 420000....yet we still respect occasions like Christmas, we pay our respects.
Similarly in India we are very much a minority (about 1.7%) and join in with Diwali celebrations which is mainly....
..a Hindu festival, but Diwali has a more Important aspect for us.....our 6th Guru was falsely imprisoned by the then Mughal rulers some 400 years ago as a 14 year old. 2 years later he was freed alongside 52 hindu royals ..he managed to negotiate this freedom without battle.
After his release he arrived in the city of Amritsar on the day of Diwali. The Sikhs were joyous and celebrations ensued all over the city. For Sikhs we celebrate Bandi Chhor ..(Liberation of Mankind)
It's just Another selfless act to help others from different beliefs..
and backgrounds. Sikhs are about 20m around the world...such a small number...but make a big impact when it comes to helping and sharing....because from the first day of formation the emphasis was always respecting the truth. When you fight evil....you don't fight a colour...
..or a background or someone's way of life. We fight evil and barbarism in whatever form it is, starting inside our ownself. Similarly when someone calls out for help, we help without judgement. Defending and never attacking but only ever with compassion at the core. 🙏🏽❤️
