Those of us who teach at the university level have a LOT to learn from people who teach k-12. They're better trained in education than us, they know a greater variety of engagement tools, they know about the educational trauma kids undergo &many are genuinely humble and kind!
The single class where I learned the most as a student was one where every class featured a 20-minute lecture by a classmate on any subject of their choosing, and we had all been surreptitiously promised we were gonna get A's
My job is to facilitate growth & give people tools to grow in the directions they want and need to grow. Sometimes my class is not important or interesting to a student, and that's okay. but it's also my job to make class flexible enough that people can find ways to care about it
Don't withhold slides/notes/resources from your students to coerce them into attending a lecture! Give everyone all the resources they need, and figure out how to make classtime actually worthwhile in a clear way that is not punitive
