Grasses are a relative latecomer as plants go. And obviously incredibly successful
Mammaries literally happened before grass too. Between this and the many attempts at evolving crabs, evolution is clearly drunk and needs to go home and sleep it off
Grasses better adapted to warmer climates were even more recent
