Brahmadaitya - One of the most popular kind of ghosts in Bengal. It's believed to be the ghost of holy Brahmin who appears wearing a traditional Dhoti & the holy thread on their body. They're kind and helpful to human being.
Sheekol Buri- The spirits of young women dwelling in water bodies, who commit suicide by drowning due to unhappy marriage or who were violently drowned against will. They lure young men, take them into the depths of waterways, entangle their feet with long hair and submerge them.
Boba- This is the Bengali version of the "Old Hag Syndrome" which is believed to be caused by a supernatural entity called "Boba" (meaning dumb/unable to speak). Boba attacks a person by strangling him when the person sleeps in a Supine position/ sleep on back.
Nishi- Nishi lures its victim to a secluded area by calling to the person with voice of loved one. The victim who responds, follows the voice, is never seen again. Nishi can't call out more than twice, so none should answer 'Nishir Daak' at night until being called atleast 3times
Pishach / Adomkhor- Pishach are flesh-eating demonic entity who mainly feed from cadavers. They like darkness and traditionally depicted to haunt cremation grounds and graveyards. They have the power to assume different forms at will and may also become invisible.
Jokkho /Jokkh: A supernatural warrior-type entity who are the guardians and protectors of hidden treasures/wealth on earth. They are usually considered to be benevolent, and said to bestow fertility and wealth upon their devotees.
Dhan Kudra- Experiences with such entities are found in South Bengal. They are usually short in height. It is believed that they stay in somebody's house and help the house owner to make money. They are believed to bring luck.
Rakkhosh- A race of beings (also depicted in Ramayana Mahabharata) often depicted with fangs, sharp claws, magical abilities. A common threatening call of Rakkhos in traditional Bengali is this couplet : Haun Maun Khaun... manuser gondho paun...😂😂😂
Petni/Shakhchunni- They're the female ghosts who died unmarried. Shakhchunni is a ghost of married woman who usually wears traditional bangles (Shankha) in hands, which is a symbol of married Bengali women.
Besho Bhoot- The word Besho comes from the word 'Baash' which means bamboo. Besho Bhoots are those who live in Bamboo gardens. People from rural Bengal believe that harmful ghosts live in Bamboo gardens and one shouldn't pass these areas after dusk.
Mechho Bhoot- The word Mechho comes from 'maachh' that means fish in Bengali. Mechho Bhoot usually lives near to the village ponds, lakes full of fish. They're fish lovers and ask the lone fisherman to give fish (Maachh diye ja). If not given, they steal fishes from boatmen.
Begho Bhoot- The word Begho comes from the word 'Baagh' meaning tiger. Begho Bhoot are the ghosts of the people who were eaten or killed by the tigers in Sunderban.
