"Relationships are hard work" is mostly a phrase used to justify bad behavior all the way through abuse, so I'd like us to retire that one. https://twitter.com/damekayla/status/1326331555380420608
You need to work at relationships in the sense that you need to think about your partner and their needs, and sometimes remind yourself not to be selfish...but it shouldn't be a constant struggle. It should make your life better, not worse.
Anyway I only ever hear that from people whose relationships seem like an exhausting mess. No thank you! Just find someone you get along with!
Things you might have to work on in a relationship:
-putting aside selfish desires for the good of your partner
-having to consult with a partner on life decisions rather than making them impulsively
-being emotionally open and intimate

Things you shouldn't have to work on:
-ignoring shitty behavior from your partner in the name of preserving "peace"
-letting another person bulldoze you in decision-making
-forcing yourself to "forgive" slights and hurts

And of course, the red flag goes up for me because this is almost always a phrase I hear from women married to men.
Which means that SHE is doing lots of hard work to keep the relationship afloat, and he is likely doing nothing or actively sabotaging her.
