Mayor says parents should make a plan for their kids because schools could close as soon as Monday.
The average positivity rate is now 2.8%. Schools close the day after we hit 3% so we could certainly see schools close over the weekend at this point. That number has been rising quickly, was 2.6% yesterday. Community-based orgs offering 3K/preK can stay open.
De Blasio calls the 3 percent threshold "effectively a social contract" - he has been clear the the conservative number was a way to reassure parents and teachers, not necessarily based on any obvious scientific metric
"I don't want people to think that indoor dining and gyms are the magical solution to all of our problems," BdB says. He says numbers have shown that transmission is widespread - but I think NYers need to know where spread is most pronounced.
This is important: schools will NOT necessarily reopen as soon as we get below 3% average positivity. So don't expect a closure on Monday and reopening on Wednesday. City will release a plan on how to reopen soon...
Very possible at this point that the entire NYC school system will shut down within 24 hours or so of the deadline for parents to decide whether they want ANY in person learning until September https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/02/nyregion/nyc-schools-reopening.html
We're finishing up the 7th week of in-person classes for NYC kids. Looks highly likely now that classrooms will not be open into the 8th week.
