A few thoughts on the great @TimAlberta piece on @ElissaSlotkin in @politico today. https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/11/13/elissa-slotkin-braces-for-a-democratic-civil-war-436301
1.) The framing of the headline isn’t big enough. “Democratic Civil War” on its own needs an explanation for what the fight is for. A better headline would be:
“Elissa Slotkin Braces for a Democratic Civil War Over Party’s Story”
“Elissa Slotkin Braces for a Democratic Civil War Over Party’s Story”
2.) That’s because what Elissa says here is spot on — our brand as a party is “mushy.” It’s almost like we’re afraid to tell people the basics of what we’re for. I firmly believe it’s why we didn’t have more people voting straight ticket Dem here in MI.
3.) I also agree that while the environment is an existential threat for us — we will lose the longer war on climate if Biden makes this his first battle out of the gate (beyond the basics of rejoining Paris, and Exec orders on climate).
4.) Elissa is right about tangible things to point to. But insulin might be too small. We need something bigger.
5.) The Democratic Party story should be focused on what we should have fixed immediately after the Recession — America’s broken financial system. We need to break up Wall Street banks, bring them back to Main Street and restore fairness to the financial system.
6.) The story of the Democratic Party should be simple — we’re the party of Main Street, not Wall Street. We’re the party of opportunity for everyone, not opportunity just for the elite.
7.) @ElissaSlotkin is amazing. That’s it. That’s the tweet.
