Greatest trophy in all of sports idc don't @ me #GoHawkeyes #BeatMinnesota
*Floyd of Rosedale, who has a poignant back story. In the 1934 Iowa-Minnesota game Gopher players used racial slurs against Iowa's star RB Ozzie Simmons, and were accused of deliberately trying to injure him.
This incident infuriated Hawkeye fans, to the point that Iowa Gov Clyde Herring said he couldn't insure the safety of Minnesota players from fans when they played the following year in Iowa City. In turn, this infuriated Gopher fans who saw it as provocation.
In order to reduce tensions and add a little levity, Minnesota Gov Floyd Olson (no relation to the pig) suggested a friendly bet between him and IA Gov Herring. Herring's wager was the Iowa state champion hog, Floyd of Rosedale. Minnesota won the game and Floyd.
The hog bet was a big hit with fans on both sides, but the the next year the real Floyd of Rosedale had gone on to the Great Bacon Case In The Sky. So in 1936 he was replaced by a mighty 90 pound bronze likeness, and has been the prize in every IA-MN football game since.
Iowa is currently on a 5-year Floyd-winning streak, and has won 20 of the last 27, but Minnesota still leads in Floyd games 42-41-2 and 62-49-2 overall.
That said, tonight's #GloomyDave forecast: since the inception of Floyd in 1935, Iowa has won 5 straight 4 times, Minnesota has won 5 straight twice; neither has ever won 6 straight.

Iowa has currently won 5 straight.

Even if Minnesota wins, they will never erase the shame of the most evil and loathsome mascot in all sports.
