(1/n) The Punjab Government vide Notification issued on 15.10.2020 is shutting down brick kilns across the province to combat smog without taking into consideration the livelihood and survival of thousands of workers who will be rendered unemployed.
(2/n) No relief measures have been put in place by the Punjab Government for the thousands of workers who are suddenly without jobs and who have families to provide for.
(3/n) For the already marginalized brick kiln workers, who barely earn enough to cover their cost of existence, to lose even this is UNJUST. They cannot be forced to disproportionately bear the burden of a cleaner environment. The onus is on all of us, not just them.
(3/n) The Punjab Relief Commissioner and Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) are well within their powers to grant relief to the workers under Section 4 of the Punjab National Calamities (Prevention and Relief) Act, 1958 and...
(4/n) Section 11(c) and 11(d) of the National Disaster Management Authority Act, 2010 which allow for ex gratia assistance and such other relief as may be necessary. The government needs fully compensate the workers that have been rendered unemployed.
(5/n) We have sent a letter today to the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Minister of Labour and Human Resources, and to all the members of Punjab Assembly's Committee on Labour Affairs. Please help and RT.
