Easy explanation. (From a design point of view)

Tech companies in their first year have more money than average companies. So it’s enough to instantly hire two to three very good high level designers.

Next step is where the problem is... https://twitter.com/twisted_myk/status/1327150555291131904
Investor no dey hear say “our designer no sabi do UI like that, Na why our app never launch”. So there’s pressure to deliver because money is not an issue and no thought is paid filling junior roles except on the ask of the senior designer himself.
Now the senior designer asking for a junior designer’s equally under pressure cos you’re unconsciously agreeing to mentor someone at the expense of your reputation & time. So senior designer may just say, “wo, let’s just hire someone like me, make I no die for mentorship stress”
Problem hereafter now is that, if the company scales significantly within the first 3 years with only the high level designers, they start looking to even hire way better people because the bar is so high at the moment and they want to outperform the last quarter/year.
Mentally, nobody’s thinking of “let’s hire a junior designer with hope that she would grow”. Startups are trying to limit the risks as much as possible and having the best staff (especially when they can afford it) does a lot to help that situation.
Typical example

Why pay two junior designers 150k each when you can pay one designer 450k and he’d deliver higher quality of work on every level. You might not get a lot done, but the work that would be done would be good enough to scale.
And so in the 4th to 5th year, company has raised $15m in series A, they are looking to poach the very senior designer that scaled their competitor’s business.

Now ask yourself, where is a junior designer in this whole conversation.

This cycle just goes on and on.
