On this day 104 years ago men from the 63rd Royal Naval Division clambered our of their trenches and attacked the German positions by the River Ancre on the Somme. One of those killed that day was Francis Henry Tebbutt, Nelson Battalion. Remembered.
Francis did not see service at Gallipoli though he was at Mudros in December 1915. His brother Robert was a little boy when Francis went to war. When he shut the gate Robert never saw Francis again. He always thought Francis died at Gallipoli & never visited his grave in France.
When I researched Francis I found out he was buried at Ancre British Cemetery and now visit him often. I placed a wreath for Robert who was by then to old to travel. Robert himself served in WW2. Robert centre served in N Africa, Italy and Yugoslavia ending up with Titos forces.
I was given the image of Francis and his 1914/15 star to look after. I am a proud custodian. He is the man I most think of when remembering the 14-18 war.
I am lucky that someone I know was able to visit him today. A cross placed.
Forgot to add, Francis’ brother Robert served with the RAF Regiment. Though not wounded he did nearly die when stung by a small black scorpion which lurked in his boot. A true gentleman.
