So Ireland are playing wales this evening. What are we expecting from both teams. Will we see a rejuvenated Wales ready to begin their new autumn campaign or will Ireland exert a lot of pressure and take all the points in the contest

Both teams play a similar structure in attack. But while Wales have struggled to fire. Ireland have really settled in to the 1-3-2-2 shape.

By using the system of pods to stretch the field Ireland have simplified and begun exerting pressure. 2/
This structure has enhanced their use of carriers such as Bundee Aki. Expect to see more of the same from Farrell especially around the 15m channels.

This wise play is what could really stretch Wales and cause the men in red some problems. Since Edwards left post RWC 3/
The welsh defence has been incredibly narrow. Whether there will be a change this week will be interesting to see. Especially with Davies back in the side. Closing the Outside channel is something wales struggled with and JD maybe able to stop attacks going round the welsh def 4/
In attack Wales have been trying a similar structure when they get clean breakdown ball. The game against Scotland had some sparks. But the ruck ball is going to have to be a priority. The Welsh has only 17% of their ball under 3 seconds. Last time out. 5/
However if Tipuric and the Welsh backrow can secure fast ball. Then Wales maybe able to fire some shots of their own. They have also been experimenting with a 1-3-2-2 structure. It has capability to stretch Ireland. 6/
There will be a chance of this. Especially if Wales can begin offloading. Pre Lockdown there was some lovely skill especially on the line break. Keeping the ball off the ground also allows a more fluid attack. 7/
Shifting the point of attack for wales could be crucial to winning the collision. When in a pod. Wales carried 50% of the time. They tip passed the ball 1/6th of the time. But they could be a more of a threat by changing how their pods vary the point of attack 8/
If they shift the attack. It may have the added benefit of creating weak shoulders. Wales struggled to generate dominant collisions winning the contact less than 35% of the time. 9/
Overall I’m really excited to see how Wales look to vary their game and if their attack structure can be executed.

Ireland will probably find space around the edges in attack. But on defence wales may find holes especially via the kicking game down the centre.

This video looks at the same try. But should hopefully offer a slightly different view of the try. Especially intriguing is how Ireland controlled the welsh defence. When they switch direction forcing Parkes to shift. And exposing Tompkins.
