The unexpected noise of ice being dropped down a long and dark bore hole in an Antarctic glacier

As it plunges down the 90metre hole, notice the noise culminating in a very unusual ping sound then a more ominous, heartbeat-like rhythm... 1/
And it’s the same every time! 2/
3/ many things going on...
As the ice falls, the pitch of the sound changes.. this is called the Doppler effect. Sound waves from a moving source change in frequency (and therefore pitch) as they pass.

Imagine car , sounds different coming towards you and moving away
4/ different frequencies are travelling at different speeds. The high frequencies travel fastest and get to the top first.. for a more in-depth explanation here’s an amazing article.
