(Content warning: first world problems.)

I've been really struggling these past couple weeks with the election, the evening darkness, & some work drama. Talking with @fromagefacile, I realized that I just feel so _trapped_ right now, more than I have since the pandemic started…
I separated a rib two weeks ago, so I've missed our intermittent mental-health midweek-PTO-day climbing jaunts, and I've ended up sacked out on the couch all evening reading online fiction / surfing Twitter more nights these past couple weeks than I care to admit.
We were talking about what I could do to fix it, and I realized - my container garden gave me something positive to focus on (obsess about?) all summer, and I really miss it. So I decided to resurrect the Aerogarden @glossolalienne gave me back in… *checks notes* …2007.
I grew a couple rounds of herbs in it back then, but it got rootbound & grotty & I was traveling all the time & didn't have time to clean it or mind it. @fromagefacile bought me new seed starters a couple years ago, but I still never managed to get it going again.
So this past weekend I spent four hours painstakingly cleaning, de-scaling, sanitizing, and re-starting it… And it ran for a week before the pump died. Which I figured was its doom, because it's over a decade old and what were the chances of getting replacement parts?
As it turns out: 100%! @fromagefacile took it apart, made a temporary hydro pool for the pods, found a new pump, put it all back together today... and it's quietly shining in the corner, and WE HAVE TINY TINY BASIL, and it is green and hopeful and it makes my heart sing.
Also, I brought in the last survivors from the container garden - my scrawny parsley and exuberant thyme - and they are positively basking in the overspill of the grow lights. They may actually thrive this winter… and if I'm lucky, they'll carry me along with them.
So if you're on the couch in the dark right now... I feel you. And I'm right there with you. And I hope you find something to help buoy your spirits through the coming days and weeks, as well.
(Or someone. THANK YOU @fromagefacile & @glossolalienne for bringing comfort and brightness into my life, now and always. 💞)
