Why I want more-esp. brownfield-housing (non-exhaustive list of reasons):
-So people don't have to spend >30% of their income on housing
-To ensure people in abusive/unhealthy relationships can end these more easily
-So people can live where they want; not where they can afford
-So people who want to live on their own can find and afford even a small studio aptmnt/unit
-End rental shortage so landlords have to compete for tenants-not vice versa.
-So people aren't compelled to car ownership/can live a good life without a car
-End poverty stress(v. bad)
-Secure tenancies/ownership will facilitate/deepen ongoing community connections esp. for school children who won't have to constantly move schools
-New homes can be built energy efficient (cheaper/healthier over long term)
-End overcrowding- reducing contagious disease spread
& giving people more personal space- esp. important for future Covid lockdowns and just generally.
-Tackle Rheumatic fever.
-Avoid future shortages of housing
-Keep housing supply sufficient in face of possible post-Covid immigration which I would personally welcome.
-Create jobs
-Incentivise wealthy/cash-rich people to invest in more productive assets rather than speculation- increased housing supply is likely a more robust solution than a Capital Gains tax to housing speculation, CGT would be more justified on distributional terms.
So, yes please, more houses!!!
