Sad about missing the holidays with your family?
Expert here! We moved to the US 8 years ago. We have never spent the holidays with our families since.
I spent the first one alone with my wife and kids thousands of miles away.
Some advice (SORRY I hate threads too...) 1/6

If you have someone with whom to spend the holidays, call your family that day, have a videoconference. But not during dinner. Enjoy the dinner with the ones with you, you're not going to be able to replicate the real thing. But it's ok. There's still a real thing happening 2/6
If you're alone, same. Unless you're calling someone who's also alone. Talk with them, spend some time, but let them have their own thing. You will miss them, but it's the perfect day to treat yourself! 3/6
Seriously, don't call others during dinner. It will probably be chaotic, will be unsatisfactory, you won't be here or there. Call them before. Or later. Not during. 4/6
Watch a movie, or sports, or whatever you fancy, like American Ninja Warrior recasts. The sound of other voices it's recomforting. Helps you go through it without being thinking about it all the time. And it's a good time to enjoy something special. Like Die Hard. 5/6
Celebrate the holidays even if you're alone. This should not be a Thanksgiving, Christmas or Hanukkah lost. It's just a different one. And I don't know about others, but I don't remember mine alone as terribly sad... just a weird one. And you may be saving lives by doing it 6/6
