Listening to Son of Maplewood. This might be a live tweet thread of my feelings as it goes down.
Ed's voice really hasn't changed that much over 20 years. Yeah its a little deeper in register but its more or less the same.
OH MY GOD THIS BLACK DRESS DEMO IS AWESOME. That piano is incredible. His VOICE. If a man played like this for me that'd be it. I'd marry him on the spot.
This is what I've needed in my life.
I think I could probably play Black Dress. I play very similar melodies when I'm just messing around. Didn't realise how close I was.
An added verse? Its a good one too. Nice lyrics.
Every Night is one of my favourites on Elephant's Graveyard. The demo is a nice take.
But something stops me, or disrupts me and time abruptly moves so slowly....
I like what's going on with Ed's voice here. Barely sounds like himself. 8/10.
WHAT THE HELL? This is what Good Friends Are Hard to Find was gonna sound like? I SO prefer this to what we got on Beautiful Lie. This is gorgeous. The other version is just sad.
Love the guitar more than the piano. Cool whistling too. 10/10, love this one.
Oh don't tell me I'll like the demo of Shanghai more than the HBM version. I like Ed's drumming. That's never bad.
WE'RE GOING TO SHANGHAI SO DON'T YOU CRY.
Its not that different from the HBM version. Pretty good. 7/10.
Let Love Not Weigh Me Down- I'll rate all the ones released on Strangers highly. Good drumming again. Love the vocals. Again, might be better than what we got in the end. I like the rawness. Missing the big emotion at points. Still 10/10 for Strangers songs.
I've never heard Petstore before. Interesting.
We're gonna break into the pet store!
And we're gonna let all the animals at the zoo go too, I guess. I'm here for it. This song is sweet. 9/10
Strangers, the song. Slightly slower. No big changes otherwise.
I like thinking of young Ed sitting my himself recording these just vibing and doing his thing. He's skilled with just about any instrument.
Beautiful version of this song. Not so different tho. 8/10
CLOCKWORK TOY!!! This is what I bought the whole unit for. Its even better than I thought it would be. This one has such a good jazzy vibe. I'm still considering covering this one. I can't play piano for shit but I sure can sing!
I listen to the live version I saved all the time..
I can't get enough of the menu
Did you get those flowers I sent you
Playing every venue across the land
Making friends in every city
Getting down to the nitty gritty
Promoting my self pity across the land-- 10/10 no surprise.
Never thought Until Tomorrow Then would sound like this. I might like it more. Something in the arrangement is kicking me right in the heart. It hits harder for sure. YES YELL THEM LYRICS, ED. Jazzy af. Different lyrics. Love it. 10/10.
Overall I rate Son of Maplewood very highly. This was such a nice little surprise and quite a treat. Great listen from start to finish. Good job @EdHarcourt of course never a disappointment.
