Both stories refer to OANN's claim about "data obtained from Edison Research" as the basis for the allegations of voter fraud, which is true. The problem, though, is the origin of the data from Edison. Neither the reporters nor Edison know what data's being referenced. But I do.
The Edison data that underlies the OANN comes from the NYT, & was uncovered by a pro-Trump forum. Here's a link to the NYT's data that really, actually does contain a bunch of flipped votes: https://static01.nyt.com/elections-assets/2020/data/api/2020-11-03/race-page/pennsylvania/president.json
I know this b/c I looked at the pro-Trump forum post & went back & looked at that JSON blob myself. There's a timestamp pair in there where 17.8K votes flip Trump => Biden. So that is the basis of the OANN report & the Trump claim, & it is indeed from Edison.
All the numbers from the Trump tweet come from that pro-Trump forum post, and ultimately are derived from an examination of the NYT/Edison feed. That feed clearly has quality problems, & Edison needs to correct it and provide context.
I would go into detail on the data quality problems uncovered in that feed, including the flipped votes, but then I would open myself up to the same social media banhammer that prevents me from linking the original pro-Trump forum post with receipts on that feed's problems.
If you want to see the one of vote flips in the NYT/Edison data, hosted on the NYT's website, which is what this OANN report is based on, ctrl-f that JSON blob for the number 2984468. That is the lip of the rabbit hole.
If you're reporting on the OANN report, then for pete's sake at least do some basic diligence & figure out where they got that Edison data from & what is being referenced. The pro-Trump forum link is not hard to find. It's all over, now. The numbers are not rocket science.
Just some basic reporting would let you uncover the fact that the Edison data at issue is:
1. From the NYT's own website, and
2. Has actual problems, including vote flips

None of this is difficult or arcane. Reporters just are lazy, I guess.
I feel like I'm taking a risk w/ my account by even tweeting about this. Despite the fact that @jack himself follows me, I've never been able to get a bluecheck for whatever reason, so I'm likely to get reported or swept into some algo. Nice knowing you guys, I guess.
