Today, Charlie Baker went to one of the wealthiest towns in Massachusetts, to one of the best funded school districts in America, a school district that spends twice as much money per student as South Hadley can afford
... a 95% white district with a per capita income more than $200,000, and chose their elementary school as the example to say that we should all fully reopen our schools.
Meanwhile, when we reopen, some of our students will be in 50 year old portables. We’re doing our best to make it safe, including doing a ton of work on HVAC systems etc—but the bottom line is, it’s clear that Baker’s confidence is misplaced.
He should visit Mosier’s portables, which hosted a bobcat infestation and had a wall falling down until last year. He should visit some of the 100+ year old schools in Worcester where they are having to completely gut the buildings to do HVAC work.
We all want to reopen. But you know we need to do it safely? We need MONEY. We need many more people. We need buses, and bigger facilities. Our district already had a nearly two million dollar shortfall BEFORE the pandemic.
Now Massachusetts is running daily covid numbers close to what we saw in March. Nationally, it’s completely off the chart.

I’m so tired. I’m so frustrated.
