The Basic Assumption is one of the hardest and most important parts of a pre-briefing. It’s often said as a routine statement and it’s difficult to keep fresh. 1/
Yesterday, I taught a group that I’ve taught in sims many times before and rattled off a quick basic assumption, “You’re all awesome, amazing, smart and trying your hardest”. 2/
The trainees actually teared up and told me they’d really needed that affirmation that day. 3/
So I did it again, but switched to the version I stole from @BetsyHuntMD : “I think you all came to work today to save children’s lives” 4/
And I thanked them all for their dedication to their patients and their own education. I made careful eye contact with each of them. I saw tears and huge smiles. 5/
The rest of the sim probably didn’t matter. Trainees often walk a fine line of wellness, and these positive affirmations matter. 6/6
