Y'all, we are working HARD to get/keep kids in school. It is IMPORTANT for learning and development, for keeping kids safe and fed, & for parents' ability to work [ #equity issue with disproportionate impact on women and low SES families]!

But...it’s 2020 & everyone is an #ArmchairEpidemiologist who has their own recs!
Remember that this virus literally did not exist until 2020; the #data & the recs are constantly evolving. As a result, sometimes, guidance docs may conflict with each other.

We review state + federal guidelines on the reg; in fact, we participate in the discussions that guide updates.
Our policies & procedures are always based on what we believe to be the most accurate, up to date science available.

We are also always concerned with #equity, & strive for uniform application of guidelines.
As a #PublicHealth department, our primary goals are health + safety. When we make recommendations, it's to keep everyone safe, not because we enjoy canceling fun stuff!

Really, I hate canceling stuff, it makes me feel like #TheGrinch!
Summary: I can’t promise that you will always like our rules, but I can promise you that our rules are well-founded and consistently applied, to the absolute best of our ability. We are #WorkingHard for you!

So what should we do? I believe that schools should be the last to close & first to reopen. This is supported by epidemiologic data.
Step 1: if you are sick – even just a little – #StayHome
!
Step 2: #mitigation like #SocialDistance #WashYourHands
#WearAMask
& #Screening

Step 3: STOP sports, inc practice – sports are a luxury we can’t currently afford
Step 4: decide when to stop. #SavingLives is more important than school. When #ContactTracing efforts are maxed out & #hospitals are at capacity, then it’s time to switch to #NTI & #StayHome

And guys? That time is coming SOON. For many, that time is NOW. Hospital staffing is VERY tight and cases continue to rise in all sectors. We are on a
that only goes up, and not in a good way!

Remember that everywhere is surging – there will be no backup #HealthcareHeroes flying in from other states to rescue us (as in early surges like #NYC).
Also: please #BeKind
& give a little #grace to your local #PublicHealth workers, who
you & want you to be safe!
