...definitely goes to my 8th grade math teacher my last year in Haiti, Mr Jean Alphonse, because that’s the first time I really struggled with math and he taught me to 1) make sense of it in my own terms/experiences & 2) try to explain whatever I DID know to a classmate/friend...
...because he believed that would help me feel empowered in what I was learning but also that our lives/environments/communities helped inform our educational experiences so much that no student walked into his classroom not knowing SOMETHING that mattered in math class!...
...And now here I am finishing up a Master’s in Math Education after over 6 years of reaching and teaching students to believe they are ALL capable of being math doers, all this after an undergrad degree in Sport Management with no clue where I was going with it. #BlackInMathEd
