During the Battle of Fredericksburg Sargent Richard Kirkland would take an unprecedented decision: he gathered all the canteens he could carry and then ventured out onto the battlefield, giving the wounded water, warm clothing and blankets. Both sides watched, not daring to shot.
Sargent Kirkland did not stop until he had helped every wounded soldier (Confederate and Federal) on the Confederate end of the battlefield, spending Hours in this all while being closely watch by Union guns, risking his own life. Kirkland's actions remain a legend to this day.
For his actions, Sargent Kirkland became known as "The Angel of Marye's Heights". Later in the war he was promoted Second Lieutenant and went on to fight at both the Battle of Chancellorsville and the Battle of Gettysbur
