Having a bit of a binge session of online linguistics courses this week. Yesterday was Jane Setter, tonight it's three speakers from Lancaster University đŸ€“
Starting off by looking at the language of lockdown, metaphors around the pandemic and ways to #reframecovid
Metaphors for the pandemic - war, battle, natural disaster, fire...
The virus as a physical attacker (Johnson).
Problems with war metaphors.
This should be a useful resource for anyone researching the language of the pandemic for language change and/or language investigations: https://sites.google.com/view/reframecovid/
Now onto what makes an 'effective' metaphor with @elenasemino
Circuit breaker ⚡
firebreak đŸ”„
water break/wave break 🌊
Interesting to see the criticisms of each of the metaphors for how they don't match the complex reality of the pandemic. But some metaphors are 'image-rich and familiar'.
That was really fascinating from @VeronikaKoller and @elenasemino. Now onto @williampdance and fact and truth during the pandemic.
Disinformation
Misinformation
Fake news
Post-truth now. Are we really living in a post-truth era? Not really, we're 'hyper-concerned' with truth.
Really interesting about the difference between 'fact' and 'truth'.
Ooh they've asked my question 😂
So the metaphors for the vaccine are as varied as the ones for the actual virus: a race, rows of an airplane being disembarked for vaccination, football matches etc.
Questions about fact-checking and countering disinformation now. It's a complicated one, as you might expect... A balance has to be struck.
Lots of good advice about dealing with and teaching about dis/misinformation and fake news. I'll post some links tomorrow.
Really good question about how quickly knowledge about the coronavirus has grown and how yesterday's information might well become tomorrow's misinformation, quite innocently. How do we deal with this?
All done now. Thanks to @lancs_events and the speakers for a very interesting evening of talks.
