In celebration of 5k followers in three months, a quick thread on what I've learned about Twitter growth

What does it take to grow on Twitter?
In its simplest form it's this:
1. Make friends
2. Post great content
3. Show up consistently
If you follow these steps you'll be ahead of 90% of other users

1. Make friends
Nobody grows their account without help
You're going to need friends who want to help you spread your message
But most of the time, as a new account, you're going to need to take the first step
The best rule here is: "don't be a shithead"

The best rule here is: "don't be a shithead"
Take your time and build a relationship with larger accounts on your timeline first
Like their posts, comment on their posts
Important:
DO NOT comment garbage...if you don't understand their post, leave it alone
DO NOT comment "actuallys"

You'll be able to tell who is receptive to new connections and who isn't
Once you've built some rapport with a larger account, reach out to them via DM and simply introduce yourself
Tell them what you appreciate about their message, and check-in with them periodically

Again, DON'T BE A SHITHEAD
Don't spam larger accounts (or anyone for that matter)
Don't get mad if they don't respond
Don't ask them to follow you or RT you
Don't comment garbage
Just be friendly, gracious, and helpful
You get back what you put out

2. Post great content
This is the hardest step
You have to stand out from the crowd if you want to grow
Look at what the average account is posting...you have to be better than that
And if you really want to grow, you have to be WAY better

The best content comes from a firmly held conviction
What is your vision for your account? What impact do you want to make on the world?
You have to say THAT
People will attach to energy and conviction
You have to be sure of what you want, and speak about it passionately

3. Show up consistently
Twitter is a busy place
If you don't post for a few days, people will forget about you (many might even unfollow you)
You have to create and engage every day
BUT: there is critical nuance to this, and I see many new accounts fall into the same trap

You DON'T need to post 20 times a day on your timeline
A few solid posts per day that you are truly proud of is all you need on your timeline
Spend the rest of your time making friends and planning out content
Delete posts that get no engagement and rework them later

The key is to not overdo it
You don't want to be the new account that posts a hundred times a day on their timeline, gets no engagement, and essentially shouts into the void
Make a few great posts a day, then engage with others and practice your content creation
Simple

Thank you for reading
I should emphasize all of these steps are important, but I am especially grateful for Step 1
I won't personally thank all of the people who helped me grow, because at this point we are friends, and we talk all the time anyway
See how that works?
