You can join tonight’s full #ANC6A meeting at 7pm via https://anc6a.org/wp-content/uploads/ANCP1120.pdf

The agenda includes, among other items, a potential public restroom at 8th & H St NE or 12th & H St NE - see https://pffcdc.org/what-we-do/public-restrooms/ https://twitter.com/ANC6A/status/1326670743657213952
I'll live-tweet some!

First up: Ola Teyibo presents on the opportunity to send students to Northeast DC's Phelps Architecture, Construction, and Engineering High School, which "can take students from anywhere!"

After graduation, students are ready for either work or college.
These pathways are available:
Architecture
Carpentry
CISCO / IT Networking
Electrical
HVAC/R

Opportunities include paid internships, job shadowing, and guest speakers.

Phelps students worked on parts of DC's Watergate renovation, Woodridge Library, and Edgewood Rec Center.
Commissioner questions:

Soderman works in this field and says the programs are very "beneficial" and thanks Phelps for the presentation.

--

Brown asks about admission

A: Students choose as one of their top schools while applying to DC high schools.
Then Phelps reviews applications starting in February and interviews prospective students.

--

Q: How can we help?
A: Volunteer as a guest speaker and talk about your career! Or, allow them to job shadow you in March. Planning for a "virtual experience" at this point.
October Treasurer's Report from Commissioner Alcorn:

Just over $35,000 in the bank after the ANC provided grants to PTOs last month.
ANC votes 7:0:0 to approve a grant of $1,000 to the Ludlow-Taylor Parent Teacher Organization to support best educational practices in the classroom.

Ludlow-Taylor is unable to continue some programs next year because of lack of funding. And this is a tough year for fundraising.
ANC votes 7:0:0 to approve another grant of $1,000 to Ludlow-Taylor Parent Teacher Organization to help purchase school supplies for students who otherwise cannot afford it.

This disbursement is at the principal's discretion: "she knows who the families are."
7:0:0 to support a fence in public parking at 205 15th St NE.

("public parking" is the space between the street and the property line that homeowners use as front yards on Capitol Hill, but it is really public space)

5:0:2 to oppose construction of a shed at the same address.
7:0:0 to support a potential public restroom pilot at 8th & H St NE with 12th & H St NE as a backup.

This does not mean H St NE will be selected for the pilot.

It may occur at another site in DC but ANC 6A's support is helpful for us having at least two options here.
7:0:0 to support a red light camera at 9th & C St NE

"Last but not least": we have a public space application for 1518 North Carolina Ave NE but the ANC already opposed it in January and we cannot find any changes so it is unclear what is going on.
Regarding 1250 Constitution Ave NE, the question of moving 8 parking spaces from a lot to the street to create additional play space is tabled to the November 18 Transportation and Public Spaces Committee meeting.
7:0:0 to support Commissioner Phillips-Gilbert's motion to request speed bumps for 18th St NE, Gales Pl NE, and Rosedale St NE

Phillips-Gilbert points out that drivers are going too fast around the Rosedale Recreation Center and children.
6:0:0 to appoint Andrew Burnett to
the Transportation and Public Space Committee and Samuel Deluca to the Economic
Development and Zoning Committee per Comm. Phillips-Gilbert.

7:0:0 to appoint Daniel McPheeters to the Economic Development and Zoning Committee per Comm. Brown.
7:0:0 for a raise for our amazing #ANC6A webmaster / agenda preparer / administrative maestro!

Kudos to Renee Dworakowski!
@ANC6A votes 7:0:0 to send a letter expressing our concerns about the firing of Principal Trogisch and lack of transparency on the part of @DCPublicSchools. This affects children all over the city.

DC General Services and DC Human Services are trying to house 60 people inside the basketball court in Sherwood Recreation Center during hypothermia season.

Commissioners are urging more shelter units, affordable housing, and better adherence to physical distancing.
DC General Services Director John Stokes describes enhanced cleaning procedures, including two staff on hand 24/7 at the facility to ensure sanitization, PPE distribution, and preventing COVID-19.
Commissioners Toomajian and Brown point out that @MayorBowser has prohibited gatherings of more than 50 people so we should not be trying to house 60 people on a basketball court.

Brown says you need at least 144 sq feet for a bed and maintaining 6 feet of physical distancing.
