Today was my last day in the PUS’s office!

Wasn’t the year I expected!
A global pandemic, a merger of FCO and DFID into the FCDO, two PUSs, and 3 months stepping in as Private Secretary.

I’ve loved it. Here are 5 things I’ve learnt from working for our top diplomat.. (thread)
1. Leadership matters, especially when times get tough.

Thank you @PhilipRBarton and @SMcDonaldFCO for the opportunity to work with you and learn from the best.

You have steered us through the most turbulent times with authenticity clarity of vision, determination and kindness
2. Our people are amazing

In the PUS’s office, you get to see the full range of the brilliant work we do overseas

Whether tackling climate change, responding to the Beirut explosion, or repatriating ~40k Brits on charter flights in Covid, our people go the extra mile for 🇬🇧
3. The Queen is our best diplomat.

It was brilliant to be a part of HM’s virtual visit and unveiling of her portrait by the talented @EscofetMiriam . Our most shared story of the year, including global attention:
4. Soft power works.

It was great fun to run Palmerston’s Twitter: a chance to showcase the modern, diverse and funny side of the office. And visitors from all over the world would stop at our office hoping to see a glimpse of him
5. Surround yourself with brilliant people.

You can’t do anything without working as a team: trust them and look out for each other.

Next step: can’t wait to join @NicholasHopton and @FleurWillson @UKinLibya for my first overseas posting ✈️🇱🇾🇬🇧 Top tips welcome!
