Having lived through an actual, real-deal authoritarian government, I can tell you personally that the lived experiences between free and unfree society often are not all that different.
Even in an unfree society, there exists a circle - a really big circle, actually - inside of which life goes on perfectly normally. You shop, you work, you transact business.

The difference between free and unfree societies is what happens when you step outside of that circle.
Just as soon as you take one step outside of that circle in an unfree society, your normal life is utterly destroyed. It's not just your body that will be broken; it will be your entire social life that will be broken, as you cannot re-enter that circle.
Knowing this, in an unfree society, people become very, very careful about making sure that they stay within that circle. In doing so, they ensure that the division between the inside and outside of that circle remains stark. That's how unfree societies remain unfree.
At my house, I have lawn signs for Biden/Harris. During a videochat with my parents, my dad noticed the sign and suggested I take them down - because Trump may be re-elected. That's a habit of unfreedom that he cultivated as he grew up in an unfree society.
