Want a PhD in Computer Graphics? Wondering which CS depts to apply to? Here's a few questions to ask.

1. Are all the graphics faculty MALE?

Not lecturers. Not affiliates. Tenure-track faculty that will advise you.

2. Separately: Are all the graphics faculty WHITE?

3. Has the dept EVER had a graphics faculty who wasn’t white, male or both? For many, the answer is no.

4. Have any of the graphics faculty been charged with sexual misconduct? For some, the answer is yes.

5. Are there FORMER non-male or non-white graphics faculty? Did they flee after just a few years?

6. Does the graphics lab have diversity problems along a different axis? A lab of all Asian men breeds its own kind of toxicity.

7. Does the graphics lab’s website conspicuously boost its diversity by listing affiliates and lecturers?

Head shots of random CV and HCI researchers with zero SIGGRAPH pubs, just to break up the whiteness?

8. Which students get faculty spots after graduation? Disproportionately the white males?

Should you expect lots of terrible career advice that only works for white guys? Importance of elevator pitches, incessantly bloviating about “big picture”, etc?

If a lab fails a question, why? Is it an escalator into a glass (or bamboo) ceiling? Does it protect toxic behavior?

After a few years in that environment, what unconscious biases do you think you’ll develop?

What behaviors will you start accepting as normal?
